The musical themes contained in this album originally came about as the result of a short-lived tabletop RPG that I played with some friends. it centered around a father and teenaged daughter who got a great deal on an old house and moved to a new town after the mother's death. The house was so cheap because, of course, it had an ugly history. The rest of the main cast included a creepy groundskeeper and two ghosts from the prohibition era - one a young girl, the other a bootlegger.

I wrote some musical themes to accompany play, and after we decided to abandon the ghost story for a classic game of D&D, I continued to play with them, bending them and twisting them into different shapes and moods. I ended up putting together this album to accompany the story that was never told, and gave it a little bit of arc to make it feel like a sort of story in itself.

There are six distinct musical themes and motifs included in this album, and if you listen closely, you will hear them combine and mutate in unexpected ways. For me, 'Hemlock House' has been a study and practice of developing and transforming simple musical ideas into larger, more interesting structures.
